Relief for Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Haiyan (Local Name: Yolanda) has now moved away from the Philippines. However, rescuers in Tacloban City in Leyte counted at least 100 dead and many more injured Saturday a day after one of the most powerful typhoons on record ripped through the central Philippine province, wiping away buildings and leveling seaside homes in massive storm surges. Communication facilities have been toppled down as well making communication virtually impossible at those directly along the path of the supertyphoon.

Local authorities have reported that there are at least 900,000 people that need help in relief and rehabilitation of their homes at more than 4Million people are affected as well in the central Philippines.

One of the most badly hit areas is Carigara, Leyte about 50km north of Tacloban City where the Typhoon Haiyan made its 2nd landfall. There are about 117 IN sponsored children in Carigara, Leyte that are directly affected while in Albay, 30 out of 48 families of beneficiaries resorted to evacuation on Friday. They have already made their way back to their homes on Saturday morning, as the weather has improved. The house of one beneficiary, Randito Openiano (PHAL0277MNZ), sustained extreme damage due to the storm, as winds blew the roof of their house.

International Needs Philippines is responding by providing relief goods to those directly affected in Leyte and Albay. It has already coordinated with its local partners for a quick response to its IN supported children and families as well as those heavily affected communities. INPH staff will be on the ground to assess further potential assistance.

Please continue to pray for the affected families. Any additional support, in cash or in kind, will be most welcome.
